Learn how Hawaii's legendary trade winds affect every shot and how to adjust your game for island conditions.

Hawaii's trade winds are both the blessing and the curse of island golf. Blowing consistently from the northeast at 10-25 mph, they shape every shot, every club selection, and every strategic decision on the course.

Understanding wind direction is the first step. On most Hawaiian courses, the trades blow from mauka (mountain) to makai (ocean), meaning you'll often play downwind on the back nine and into the wind on the front. Learn to read the tree tops and flag movement before each shot.

Club selection is everything. In a 20 mph headwind, you may need two full clubs more than normal. Conversely, downwind shots can fly 20-30 yards further. Keep the ball flight low when playing into the wind — punch shots and knockdowns are your best friends.

The mental game matters most. Accept that the wind will affect your ball. Aim for the fat part of the green, take your medicine on wayward shots, and enjoy the challenge. The players who score best in Hawaiian conditions are those who embrace the wind rather than fight it.
